Ole Smoky plans to open second distillery
Ole Smoky Distillery, a Tennessee-based moonshine distillery, plans to expand operations and open its second distillery in the Smoky Mountain town to meet the demand for its products.
Ole Smoky co-owner Joe Baker said he and Chuck Edwards have purchased Legends Restaurant on the downtown Parkway and will make different spirits at that site.
Additionally, Ole Smoky's partners Baker, Cory Cottongim and Tony Breeden have purchased land in the Glades arts and crafts community to open a branch of the distillery.
The company hopes to produce traditional-style Tennessee whiskey as well as brandy with the new venture, The Mountain Press reported.
Baker said he and Edwards will explore other types of spirits, such as brandy and whiskey, that have been produced in the mountains for centuries. Baker need to obtain state and federal permits and licenses to operate new spirits-making equipment.
Ole Smoky Distillery, located in Lineberger Plaza, opened in 2010 and expanded last year. According to Baker, the distillery is not able to produce enough product to meet the demand, hence the company decided to open a second branch in Glades.
Baker expects the new operations in the Glades and venture into the old restaurant will create a number of jobs.
